What You Should Do if You are Involved in an Auto Accident

Car accidents happen so suddenly, many times people forget what they should do and how they should handle themselves. In order to best protect yourself, especially if the accident was caused by another person, try and remember to do the following:

  • Take pictures or video of the scene using your cellphone if possible
  • Write down or take a picture of the other driver’s insurance card
  • Write down the license plate numbers and contact information of any other parties that are involved
  • Get the names and contact information of any witnesses to the accident
  • Call the police and fill out a report to document the incident
  • Go to the doctor (even if you feel that you may not be injured, you should seek medical attention to make sure you didn’t suffer injuries-sometimes injuries such as whiplash and back and neck injuries don’t show symptoms for days)
  • Contact a personal injury lawyer to find out if you have a claim

When car accidents occur, it is natural to rush the process and get on with your day. But, in order to best protect yourself, you should document as much of the incident as possible so you can prove negligence and fault should you decide to pursue damages via a car accident lawsuit.

At the time of an accident, you may be in shock and may not feel the symptoms of serious back or neck injuries. Thus, it is important to seek medical attention even if your symptoms aren’t bad. In addition to getting the treatment you need, by going to the doctor, you will have documentation of any injuries, which will be important in a personal injury lawsuit.

You should also talk to an attorney to find out if you qualify to file a lawsuit against the negligent parties. During an investigation, your attorney may find other guilty parties such as a mechanic who failed to fix your vehicle properly or an auto parts manufacturing company who issued a defective part.
