Expected Goodyear Tire Recall affects Thousands of GM Vehicles

As the deadline to file GM ignition switch compensation claims nears, the automaker continues to get hit with problems. The latest for the automaker is a Goodyear tire recall that affects thousands of GM’s full-size crossovers. In response to the expected tire recall, which will affect some 48,500 tires, GM told dealers to stop selling almost 6,300 of its 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, GMS Acadia and Buick Enclave utility vehicles.

According to USA Today, Goodyear is expected to recall about 48,500 tires sometime next month. Of those, more than 32,000 were made for GM’s crossovers. Goodyear is currently working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and GM. According to reports, no other automakers are involved.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said GM is making sure there are no sales of possibly affected vehicles until Goodyear officially recalls the tires. Once the recall is announced, GM plans to issue its own recall.

The reason for the expected Goodyear tire recall is that the tires could experience small cracks in the tread. The company said in a statement that it will be replacing the 18-inch tires with similar models for free. Affected tires include Fortera HL tires, size P255/65R18 109S that were made between Nov. 30 and Jan. 10.

This latest setback for GM is just frosting on the recall cake at this point. The automaker recalled millions of vehicles last year for various defects. The largest recall involved faulty ignition switches that have been tied to 49 deaths and several injuries.

GM set up a compensation program for the families of persons injured or killed in accidents caused by the defective ignition switches and has extended the deadline to apply to Jan. 31. So far, according to GM, 49 death claims, seven catastrophic injury claims and 65 lesser injury claims have been approved by the fund. The company also reported that it has repaired 1.26 million vehicles.
