Auto Care and Safety Tips for Cold Weather Conditions

Most of us don’t really consider San Diego to have harsh winter weather. But, this winter has brought us colder days and nights, some rain and even snow in places like Ramona and Murrieta! And, what many of us forget is that it is just as important to prep our cars for winter weather as it is to bundle up with a jacket and hat.

Our San Diego auto attorneys would like to share the following tips for preparing your cars for colder, harsher weather:

  • Check your tires and make sure they are full of air and have plenty of tread — slippery, wet and icy roads can be dangerous, especially when tires are bald or low. Make sure to rotate your tires during servicing and keep them full. Also keep in mind that if you are planning to visit the snow, you may need to switch to snow tires or add chains.
  • Top off your battery — it is important to keep your fluids topped off, especially during these colder months. To top off your battery, simply unscrew the cap on the top of the battery and check the level of fluid. If the fluid is low, add distilled water via a funnel, making sure not to fill it past the bottom of the cap. *When topping off any fluids in your vehicle, make sure it is off!
  • Use the correct windshield wiper fluid — it is important to use a windshield wiper fluid with antifreeze solution for maximum clarity. Using the wrong type of fluid can result in smudges and streaks, making it difficult to see.

Always be prepared with an emergency kit in your trunk — it is important to always have emergency tools on hand, such as bottled water, blankets, flashlight (with working batteries), flares, snacks and Band-Aids in case of an emergency, especially when traveling long distances or in harsh weather.

  • Even if you live in San Diego, it is always best to play it safe and be prepared. At The Law Office of Melinda J. Helbock, A.P.C., we wish you a Happy New Year and safe driving throughout 2015.
