Financial, legal and public pressure is mounting on Bayer AG, the parent company of Monsanto, to reach settlements in cases related to people who were diagnosed with cancer after being exposed to Roundup, a popular weed killer. Bayer has been subject to three straight jury verdicts that awarded more than $2 billion in damages over the past several months, and news reports from a trial underway in St. Louis have sparked speculation that Bayer and Monsanto may be considering a settlement in the thousands of cases that have been brought against the companies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s official position is that glyphosate does not cause cancer, but many scientific studies refute that position, and the World Health Organization has listed the chemical as a possible carcinogen, as has the state of California. At the center of the thousands of lawsuits currently pending against Monsanto and Bayer is a relatively common form of cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), which accounts for about 4% of all cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. Symptoms of NHL include:
If you or a loved one regularly used or have been exposed to Roundup or any other glyphosate-based weed-killer products, you could be eligible for compensation. The Law Office of Melinda J. Helbock A.P.C. offers free legal consultations to people whose lives have been impacted by Roundup.
Thousands of women have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, alleging that use of the company’s talcum powder and baby powder products caused them to develop ovarian cancer. One jury already has awarded a huge verdict ($4.7 billion) in a Missouri case, and a new trial is underway in early 2020 in Georgia. While Johnson & Johnson has appealed the Missouri verdict, thousands of other lawsuits are proceeding against the company, and scientific research continues to probe the connection between ovarian cancer and talcum powder. Many people have used talcum or baby powder to reduce moisture and odor in their groin area, and many lawsuits involve women who regularly used talc in this way and later developed ovarian cancer. A study published in early 2020 claimed there was no statistical connection between ovarian cancer and talcum powder, but the study included a very small number of cancer cases, and the racial makeup of the women included in the study may have caused the use of baby powder to be understated. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and it ranks fifth in female cancer deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. Less than half of those diagnosed with ovarian cancer live five years beyond their diagnosis.
Symptoms of ovarian cancer include:
Women who regularly used talcum powder or baby powder and later developed ovarian cancer may have a case against the makers of the product. If this describes you or a family member, contact the Law Office of Melinda J. Helbock A.P.C. to arrange a free evaluation of your case.
The long-term use of asbestos and related products continues to contribute to the development of many different health problems, especially mesothelioma. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed and are proceeding against public agencies, manufacturing companies and companies that make consumer products like talc-based powders and other goods. Johnson & Johnson has been sued by thousands of people who say they were diagnosed with mesothelioma after using the company’s products, and in late 2019 a New Jersey jury agreed with plaintiffs’ claims that J&J talcum powder products contained asbestos, and they awarded the four plaintiffs $750 million in punitive damages. Other verdicts have been overturned by judges, but more than 16,000 cases are proceeding against the company, alleging that their talc products contain asbestos. In the most recent verdict in New Jersey, jurors determined that Johnson & Johnson had not adequately informed consumers about the risk of exposure to carcinogenic substances, namely asbestos. Long banned in many countries and no longer mined in the U.S., asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a cancer that affects a crucial layer of cells throughout the body. Symptoms of mesothelioma include:
Only about 10% of all people diagnosed with mesothelioma live beyond five years, according to the American Cancer Society. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos and have since become sick with mesothelioma, the time is now to contact a qualified attorney. The Law Office of Melinda J. Helbock is experienced in such cases, and you may be eligible for a free case evaluation. Contact us today at 858.794.1456.
