Surgical mesh products are used to repair pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs in about 30 to 50 percent of women after childbirth. It is a condition that occurs when the muscles and tissues surrounding organs such as the uterus, bladder, bowel and top of the vagina become weak, causing the organs to prolapse into the vagina. Surgical mesh can be used to reinforce the organs into place following surgery.

Stress urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine, a condition that occurs when the pelvic floor muscles become weak. This can occur after childbirth, menopause or after receiving transvaginal mesh to correct POP.

Transvaginal Mesh Injuries and Lawsuits

When surgical mesh is used for transvaginal repair of POP, it can result in serious complications. In fact, the FDA issued a safety communication back in July 2011 to notify health care providers about the risks associated with transvaginal placement of surgical mesh products.

According to the FDA alert, complications are not rare and the agency noted that use of surgical mesh for transvaginal repair of POP is “an area of serious concern.”

The agency said it received more than 1,000 reports of injuries between 2005 and 2007 and another 2,874 reports of complications associated with transvaginal mesh products between Jan. 1, 2008 and Dec. 31, 2010. The FDA also noted that mesh placed abdominally for POP repair seems to result in fewer complications that mesh that is placed through the vagina.

The Law Office of Melinda J. Helbock, A.P.C. is currently investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of women who have suffered complications following surgery to repair POP. Injuries can include:

  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Mesh contraction, causing vaginal tightening and shortening
  • Surgical mesh erosion
  • Bowel and bladder erosions
  • Hemorrhage
